The events of the Atlanta shooting were unfortunate and it is incredibly disheartening that as a nation we are seeing shootings like this occur more often than ever before. Our most recent mass shooting took place on Monday, March 22, 2021, at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado.

The suspect in Monday's mass shooting was a man named Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa. He fired multiple rounds at the King Soopers grocery store, killing 10 people. Currently, he is being prosecuted for 10 accounts of first-degree murder for Denny Stong (20), Neven Stanisic (23), Rikki Olds (25), Tralona Bartkowiak (49), Suzanne Fountain (59), Teri Leiker (51), Kevin Mahoney (61), Lynn Murray (62), Jody Waters (65), and Boulder police Officer Eric Talley (51).

Defense attorney Kathryn Herold told the court, “Our position is that we cannot do anything until we can fully assess Mr. Alissa's mental illness.” However, Martin Stuart, chairman of the Colorado Bar Association's Criminal Law Section, said Thursday, “It's rare that someone pleads not guilty because of insanity, and it's very rare that it works.” The suspect is currently being held without bail and it is said that his next court hearing is to be no sooner than 60 days from last Thursday.

Alissa was originally booked into the Boulder County Jail. A spokesperson for the county sheriff's office, Carrie Haverfield, told NBC News on Friday morning that he "remains under our custody, however, he is being housed at another correctional facility outside of Boulder County, due to safety concerns and threats that our jail staff became aware of” to his safety and the safety of others. Vice President Kamala Harris commented on the event calling it, “an absolute tragedy… it's 10 people going about their day, living their lives, not bothering anybody.” This shooting was a tragedy, but it may cause a tragedy for gun owners across the country as Democrats use this situation to further limit the purchase of firearms.
